As I stated in my last blog, I am doing my research on the Valley City State University community. The reasoning behind that is because I lived in the dorm and worked in the cafeteria. I still think that the spokesperson for VCSU is the president Steven Shirley. Basically all of the emails concerning campus were from him. The means of communication for VCSU were email, notifind, a special flood page setup on the VCSU homepage, and also word of mouth.
I am not sure who all I need to talk to for all the information I need for this assignment. The only person I can think of to find out how they handled the communication for campus is if I talk to or email Steven Shirley. Even though I was affected by this flood, because I lived and worked on campus, I don’t know much about the communication except for the few ways that I received information. I live in Edmore, which is about 2 and a half a hours north of Valley City, and would only hear a few things here and there from people about the situation.
Research for this project is going slow, but it is being conducted. I am finding bits and pieces to try to fit together into this project. A lot of the information found is from the emails received and the flood information page on the VCSU website. That is the best information I can find at the moment.

I would suggest talking to other students and faculty, asking them what they thought of the communication in VCSU. Was it accurate? Prompt? Thorough? I also talked to other citizens around the area. I, like you, am from a town north of Valley City. I only live about 45 miles away but people still said they had a hard time reaching information about Valley City considering the radio stations didn't come in clear there. I did tell them about a wonderful thing called the internet, which had a lot of info on it, but that's not the way some people like to receive info! But at VCSU we don't have a choice. We are a technology-based school and email is the number one form of communication.
ReplyDeleteThe emails are probably the biggest form of communication since VCSU is a technology based campus. I agree with you that Dr. Shirley is the lead communicator from the campus. Another form of communication is the notifind system that the campus uses that sends text messages out. I would recommend talking to any other students, staff and faculty about how they thought of how the crisis was handled because they were affected by the flood as well.
ReplyDeleteI am also finding research difficult. Word of mouth may not have been best way to get out information. I heard things that happened before they happened. Not everything was exactly the truth. People added their personal opinions into what they were saying. I agreed with everything you said about Dr. Shirley being the spokesperson
ReplyDeleteYa research for the campus would be tough since they were working so closely with the city itself. But emails would be the best way to find information and when it was sent out about the flooding and what was going because of it. I would try emailing some of the faculty, staff, or even other students along with Dr. Shirley.
ReplyDeleteThis is a good start. I would agree that Dr. Shirley was one of the spokespersons, but there were others. Dr. Shirley communicated after the fact, who was the person that informed us right away using notifind and the blog? Were those the only forms of communication used during the flood? I was here when the voluntary evacuation of the city was put in place, and television was also used. They scrambled the channels to place the message.
ReplyDeleteI would suggest looking at the news papers during the time of the flood, Bismarck tribune, Fargo Forum, the Valley City news paper (I forget the name). I would also go to the local business and ask for a fast interview about the flood. I would also fallow Heidi's advice "talking to other students and faculty" this should get you some good information. also another place to look is in the archives on NOAAs weather website. they usually have all the warning and civil emergency messages that were issued during the time of the flooding.
ReplyDeleteDr. Steven Shirley would be a great source for this paper. He would have all the notifications and e-mails that were sent out to staff and students. Any information you would need would be really good from Dr. Shirley. Also you could contact your Professors and find out what they might know. I know a lot of them had to deal with this flood in there own way and that would be a good way to find information about VCSU.
ReplyDeleteI think Dr. Shirley would be the best spokesperson if you were doing your research on the crisis VCSU went through with the canceling of classes and all, but for the city I would look else where. An email to him might help significantly because he was working with the leaders of ther city when dealing with the VCSU situation. I would email around and ask others and you will probably get a different spokesperson.
ReplyDeleteI agree Steven surely is the spokesperson for sure. I am also doing my research on the VCSU community. The best way to do researc his to look up material from old emails. Go through and check your old deleted emails, I found out that was the best way to cronologically go about getting the facts at the right times. Its all right there in the emails he and others from campus sent out.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the emails were probably the most significant form for communication to members of the VCSU community. For the most part, they play the biggest role in keeping students such as me informed on the situation. However, email was down during the “climax” of the whole crisis. This is where Notifind stepped in and really proved its worth to me. For me Notifind was the most reliable form of communication during this crisis.
